The recent viral incident involving a PhP 3 million billing shock has been resolved, with statements issued by both Elmer de Guzman, the customer, and Globe Telecom.
Elmer de Guzman experienced a shocking three million Pesos bill from Globe Telecom after using their roaming data plan during an international trip. De Guzman provided evidence that he had indeed activated Globe’s unlimited data plan, yet he was still billed the exorbitant amount.
The scanned bill, which was shared over 2,800 times on Facebook, quickly went viral. Globe Telecom responded by acknowledging the issue, describing it as an isolated incident, and stated they were investigating similar cases abroad. Fortunately for De Guzman, Globe reversed the charges, much to his relief.
In response to Globe’s statement, De Guzman shared his thoughts on Facebook last night:
“Hi Everyone. Regarding this ‘viral’ P3 Million Globe mobile bill, I want to thank you all for your comments and concerns. I am overwhelmed by the response this post received. Although I did not intend for this to go viral, the attention it garnered helped address my concern properly. I appreciate the continued support from everyone, but I have decided to take down the post. Globe has issued their official statement and confirmed that the issue will be rectified. Therefore, I will not make any further comments. Thank you very much.”
Globe Telecom’s original statement reads as follows:
“We wish to clarify the issue concerning the mobile phone charges of Mr. Elmer de Guzman, a postpaid subscriber of Globe Telecom.
We acknowledge that Mr. De Guzman enrolled in the Bridge DataRoam Unlimited promo on November 10, 2013. This promo exempts subscribers from paying the regular rate of PhP 2.51 per 10 kilobytes of data. According to our records, Mr. De Guzman used 11,139,210KB of data, which would typically amount to over PhP 3 million, including surcharges and VAT.
Our initial findings indicate that the system failed to apply the correct zero rate for the promo, inadvertently causing the billing error. While this is an isolated case, we are proactively investigating to see if similar issues have occurred in other regions where the BDU Roaming promo is available.
Globe has corrected the charges to reflect the accurate amount in Mr. De Guzman’s billing statement. We assure our subscribers that we prioritize resolving billing queries and concerns through our customer service team.
We deeply value our customers’ trust and aim to further strengthen our relationship with them.”
